Last month we were excited to announce that FireCloud is getting a big upgrade, including a new and improved user interface called Terra. As a reminder, going forward we'll use the name “Terra” to refer to the overall platform that you use to get your work done, while “FireCloud” will refer to the NCI-sponsored project page that features TCGA and TARGET data. You can already access Terra here if you have a FireCloud account, and you may have received an email invitation to check it out.

Today we're following up on that announcement with some important news: the "classic" FireCloud portal will be turned off on May 1st. At that point, all traffic to FireCloud will be automatically redirected to Terra.

We are working hard to minimize any potential disruption, but it will nevertheless be a major change, so here are a few things you need to know to prepare.

  • When you log in to Terra with your existing FireCloud credentials, everything that you’re used to seeing — workspaces, data, tools, and notebooks — will be there waiting for you. They might just look a bit different -- hopefully nicer!
  • The automatic redirect will be a "deep" redirect, so clicking on direct links to specific resources like workspaces or methods will take you to their new location. There should not be any broken links; you will not have to hunt around for your stuff.
  • If you have not yet received an email invitation, you can expect to receive one within the next couple of weeks. Or you can take matters into your own hands and take a peek here .
  • This side-by-side comparison between FireCloud and Terra will help you navigate the new interface and upgraded technical features. It also outlines the development roadmap for what's coming next.

Between now and May 1st, we'll continue to maintain both portals in parallel, but we encourage you to start getting oriented to Terra as soon as possible. We think you're going to like it!
