Free Credits

Get free credits to cover compute and storage costs

The FireCloud Free Credits Program is intended to give newcomers to the platform an opportunity to try it out at no cost.

The current Free Credits campaign is primarily targeted at users of GATK, to facilitate migration to GATK4 from older versions and showcase the newest versions of the GATK Best Practices pipelines. GATK pipelines have therefore been preconfigured in FireCloud workspaces to make them easily runnable out of the box. However, any newcomer to FireCloud is welcome to take advantage of this opportunity; the credits are NOT reserved for use with the GATK pipelines specifically.

This free credits program campaign is sponsored by our friends at Google Cloud Platform. To be clear, we at the Broad Institute are not getting any share of any revenue that may be generated by GCP as a result of this program.

Signing up

Free credits will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis, so the sooner you sign up, the more likely you are to receive credits. To take advantage of this unique opportunity, all you need to do is register for an account on the FireCloud portal (which is itself always free and open to all) and sign up for the free credits program. Follow these steps:

  1. Register for an account in the FireCloud portal. If you do not have a Gmail account, link your current email address to a Google identity by following these instructions.

  2. Apply here with the email address you used to register for FireCloud so we can assign you the free credits. You will receive an email when the free credits are available in FireCloud

  3. When you log into the FireCloud portal you will see a banner inviting you to start your free trial. Simply click the "Start Trial" button in the banner to get started.

After clicking “Start Trial”, you will receive your own FireCloud Billing Project that holds the credits. The billing project will have the following naming convention: fccredits-xxx-xxx-xxxx. Be sure to use this billing project whenever prompted in FireCloud, such as when creating workspaces, launching analyses, or downloading data. Starting the trial will also activate the sixty day countdown.

Note that we reserve the right to accept or reject applications for credits at our discretion. This is intended to protect against any attempts to abuse the credits program, since our goal here is to give as many people as possible the opportunity to try out the pipelines.
