Integrative Genomics Viewer IGV 2.3 (Archived)

This page is for the archived version of the last IGV 2.3.x release. 
IGV 2.3.x requires Java 7. Starting with IGV 2.4, Java 8 is required.

Install IGV 2.3

There are 4 options for downloading and launching this version.

(1) Java Web Start (JWS). Use the buttons below to launch IGV directly from our web site. 

  • Clicking on one of the buttons will download a .jnlp file and then execute the file using Java Web Start (JWS).
  • Some web browsers will only download the .jnlp file and not automatically launch IGV. For these browsers, locate the file in your folder designated for browser downloads, and double-click on the file to launch IGV.
  • JWS on Mac: For some Mac users, IGV will not launch automatically on double-click due to security settings. If you are presented with security errors, try the following instead:
    • Right-click on the downloaded .jnlp file and select Open With > Java Web Start.
    • Dismiss the warnings to continue.
    • When IGV has been run this way at least once from the .jnlp file, from then on you can double-click on the file to launch. 
    • Alternatively, install the Mac App or the Binary Distribution (see below).
  • Windows: To run with more than 1.2 GB of memory on Windows you must install 64-bit Java. Most Windows installs do not include 64-bit Java by default, even if the operating system is 64-bit. Attempting to use the 2GB or greater launch options with 32-bit Java will result in the error "could not create virtual machine".

(Only for large memory machines with 64-bit Java)

(2) Mac App.  Download and unzip the Mac App archive, then double-click the IGV application to run it. The application can be moved to the Applications folder, or anywhere else. 

(3) Windows Package.  Download and unzip the zip archive, then double-click the igv.bat file to start IGV. A black console window will appear, followed by the IGV application. This option includes a modified Java executable for use with high-resolution screens. 

(4) Binary Distribution.  Download and unzip the binary distribution archive in a folder of your choosing. IGV is launched from a command prompt -- follow the instructions in the readme file. To launch IGV on Mac or Linux use the shell script igv.sh. On Windows use igv.bat.
